How to Apply
To be considered for the UMKC Counseling Services Internship Program, applicants must fulfill the following criteria.
- Current enrollment in an APA-accredited (or CPA-accredited) doctoral program in counseling or clinical psychology
- Successful completion of doctoral comprehensive exams by November 15
- Completion of a minimum of 300 intervention hours from practica. Refer to the AAPI for what are included under “Intervention Experience.” These hours may also include practicum training accrued during a terminal master’s program.
- Completion of a minimum of 25 assessment hours, primarily in administrating/scoring, but may include a few hours of integrated report writing.
- Successfully proposed dissertation by Rank deadline
- Approval by the academic training program verifying readiness for internship
- Completion of all required coursework and practica prior to the start date of the internship
The following characteristics are qualities we look for in prospective interns, as we find these qualities are typically present in interns who have been successful at our site.
- Experience with and strong interest in working with students
- Strong, demonstrated commitment to diversity and multiculturalism, and interest in working with a highly diverse student population
- Experience with assessment

UMKC Counseling Services uses the AAPI online application. Hard-copy, mailed-in applications will not be accepted. Visit the APPIC to learn more about the AAPI online application.
As predoctoral interns are considered University employees, Counseling Services adheres to UMKC’s Human Resources’ policy regarding successful completion of background checks as a prerequisite of employment.
This internship site agrees to abide by the APPIC policy that no person at this training facility will solicit, accept, or use any ranking-related information from any intern applicant.
Required application components
- Completed APPIC Application for Psychology Internship (AAPI) form
- In a cover letter or letter of interest, describe your qualifications and professional experience which you believe make you a good match with our site. Please also elaborate your specific goals for internship
- Current vita
- Official transcripts for all graduate work
- Three letters of recommendation, at least two from supervisors familiar with your more recent clinical work
Deadline for Application
Application must be submitted through the AAPI Online by 11:59 p.m. Central Time on November 15.
Admissions
The University of Missouri Kansas City Counseling Services considers applicants from APA or CPA accredited doctoral programs in counseling or clinical psychology.
UMKC Counseling Services provides services that include individual therapy, group therapy, relationship/couple’s therapy, assessment, crisis walk-in consultation, psycho-educational outreach programming, BASICS evaluations, supervision of practicum trainees and more. Applicants are expected to have an affirming stance toward all social identities and all individual differences. Applicants are expected to engage in efforts to deepen multicultural awareness, sensitivity and competence related to diversity in every form.
