Crisis and Emergency
Crisis intervention may be needed if a student is having suicidal thoughts, experiencing severe anxiety, seeking support for a recent trauma, or grieving the recent death of a loved one. While most services offered by UMKC Counseling Services are scheduled, crisis situations do arise and require immediate intervention. UMKC students are encouraged to contact UMKC Counseling Services if they or someone they know needs immediate help.
Services Available During Business Hours
UMKC Counseling Services is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday when UMKC is in session/open.
If a crisis occurs during these hours, contact our office at 816-235-1635.
You might be asked to connect with the Counselor-On-Call, either by phone or in person. UMKC Counseling Services offers brief Crisis Consultation appointments at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily. Brief Crisis Consultation appointments are free and should only be used for crisis situations. Options to address a crisis also might include referral to another resource, either on or off campus.
Evening and Weekend Assistance
If a crisis intervention is required after normal business hours, or if a student is concerned about their own immediate safety or the immediate safety of a friend, they should do the following.
- Go to the nearest hospital emergency room
- Call 988
- Call campus police at 816-235-1515
UMKC students living on campus may also contact their resident assistant (R.A.) or other UMKC Residential Life staff to connect with appropriate support and resources.
Response to Traumatic Events
UMKC Counseling Services staff are available to consult with student leaders as well as university units and departments to develop timely on-site response to traumatic events.
Reporting Distressed, Disturbing or Disruptive Behavior
If you are concerned about the overall safety or mental health of a student and would like the university to follow-up with the student use the referral form titled Submit a CARE Team Referral.
The CARE Team is not tasked with responding to emergencies. If this is an emergency and you need immediate assistance or consultation, contact UMKC Police at 816-235-1515.
For all other emergencies, contact 911.
