Guiding Principles

The foundation for our program is built upon a handful of guiding princples that help students make more confident choices when it comes to picking their major.

Self-Discovery

As part of the UCollege experience, students are encouraged to embark on self exploration exercises to learn more about their interests, skills and values, reflecting on what's most important to them, which acts as a guide while they move through the program.

Academic Exploration

Instead of trying to choose from dozens of majors and pathways, University College (UCollege) students use our Major Academic Pathways (MAPs) approach, which groups majors with shared interests, skills and similar career outcomes together into just a handful of managable choices.

Our exploratory advisors and staff help students choose MAPs that are relevant them.

Intentional Course Enrollment

Our UCollege team helps students identify and enroll in courses that allow them to test fit their interests while staying on track for graduation.

Network Building

Reading about majors, courses and professions is great, but learning about them first hand is better. As part of the UCollege program, students have opportunties to hear from and connect with relevant faculty, staff and community professionals.

Courses for Exploratory Students

During University 102 and University 202, students participate in self assessment and evaluation exercises to help them learn more about their interests, skills and values; explore different majors and careers; and engage with relevant faculty, staff and community contacts in different professions — all of those great tenents we highlighted previously, condensed into two valuable courses.
