Hazing is any activity expected of someone joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers them regardless of a person’s willingness to participate.
Behaviors that emphasize a power imbalance between new members and active or existing members, such as deception; demerits; silence periods with implied repercussions; deprivation of privileges for some members; requiring new members to perform duties not assigned to existing members; socially isolating new members; random tests on information; name-calling; requiring new members to use titles for existing members while they are identified with demeaning names; expecting certain items to always be in one’s possession.
Behaviors that confuse, frustrate or cause undue stress to some members, such as verbal abuse; threats or implied threats; lineups; asking new members to wear humiliating attire; stunt or skit events with degrading, crude or humiliating acts; personal servitude for active members; sleep deprivation.
Behaviors that have the potential to cause physical or emotional harm, such as forced or coerced alcohol or other drug consumption; beating, paddling or other physical acts; branding; forced or coerced ingestion of vile substances; water intoxication; the mistreatment of animals; illegal activity; abductions and kidnapping.
It is not possible to list all possible forms of hazing, so this list generally categorizes hazing behaviors.
Hazing is strictly prohibited at UMKC. Any such activity is incompatible with UMKC's mission and the vision of the fraternity and sorority community, while also compromising personal liberties and safety.
If you feel you have insight into an incident that may be considered hazing, please complete the anonymous reporting form.
