Environmental Health and Safety provides a number of learning opportunities for students, faculty, and staff.

Laboratory Safety (HSI)

UMKC has implemented a new laboratory training curriculum. This online curriculum was developed by the Health and Safety Institute and has been adopted at all four University of Missouri campuses.

Biological Safety

Basic Introduction to Biosafety: This general course provides essential information about safely working with biohazards, including safe work practices, working with sharps, and disinfection/sterilization.
Attendees Anyone using biological agents

NIH Recombinant DNA (rDNA) Guidelines: This course provides information about the NIH guidelines regulating the usage of recombinant and synthetic nucleic acid molecules.

OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens: This course provides information about safely working with samples potentially containing bloodborne pathogens, including exposure routes, precautions to prevent exposures, and how to handle spills. 
Attendees Anyone using human or nonhuman primate samples (tissues, cells, blood, fluids, etc.) of any kind

Radiation Safety

Radiation Worker - New User Radioactive Materials Training: This course covers basic radiation physics, instrumentation and biological effects of ionizing radiation, radiation protection principles and radioactive waste, among other topics. This class must be completed before you will be able to register for the Radioactive Materials Lab Demonstration and Observation class. 
Attendees All personnel who wish to become a radioactive materials worker at UMKC

Radiation Worker - Radioactive Materials Lab Demonstration and Observation: This course is the second part towards becoming a radioactive materials worker. The course will cover UMKC radiation safety policy and procedures specific to the radioactive material used. 
Attendees Individuals who have completed the new user radioactive materials training course

Radiation Worker - Radioactive Material Refresher Training: This course is required to maintain radiation worker status. Review radiation safety hazards, procedures, and UMKC radiation safety policy. 
Attendees Radiation workers must complete this training if it has been 11 months since initial radioactive materials training
Schedule Annually, and reminder notices are sent out thirty days prior to the month training is due

UMKC Radiation Producing Devices (RPD) and X-ray Refresher Training: This course is provided to maintain awareness of the Missouri Radiation Protection regulations regarding the acquisition, use, change of location, or disposal of radiation producing devices.
Attendees Users or owners of RPDs
