UMKC offers a Campus Wide License that provides unlimited use of Matlab and SimuLink to all students, faculty, staff, and researchers. Licensing at UMKC is no longer limited to specific departments. All units and departments at the University are covered to use Matlab for coursework, academic use, and research purposes. The Matlab desktop application is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux devices. Mobile versions are also available for Apple iOS and Android.
Launch the Matlab R2024a (or newer) application to begin the registration process.
Alternatively, to manually register, go to the UMS Matlab Portal and click 'Sign in to get started'
Click 'No account? Create One' under the email box
Register using your username@umkc.edu
After entering your email on the registration form, you can skip the other boxes and click Sign In
You will be redirected to the UMKC login page, where you need to enter your username@umsystem.edulogin information.
Fill out the profile information, check the agreement box, and click continue
Starting with version R2024a of the Matlab desktop application (or accessing the Mathworks website directly) will require you to enter your account information in two different formats.
The first prompt will be a generic Mathworks login prompt with the Mathworks logo only asking for your email address. On this prompt, enter your UMKC Mathworks ID in the format username@umkc.edu (not @umsystem.edu).
If this is the first time you have logged into Matlab, see above steps regarding one-time registration.
When entering your Mathworks ID, you will not initially be prompted for a password. Clicking 'next' will redirect you to the UM System multi-factor authentication (MFA) system to complete your login. On this login prompt, enter your account in the format username@umsystem.edu (do not repeat the @umkc.edu format from the first prompt).
Enter your UMKC password and complete the MFA process.
If you are prompted for a password on the initial Mathworks login screen or are not redirected to a UM System login page, please check the formatting you entered on the first login prompt. For more information on the MFA login process, please see the UMKC MFA FAQ.
Matlab Toolboxes are collections of functions that extend the core functionality of Matlab. Each toolbox incorporates a different set of specialty functions that can be used within Matlab. Historically, each UMKC Department selected which toolboxes to license and offer within their units based on specific needs. The UMKC Campus Wide License for Matlab ensures that all UMKC students, faculty, and staff have access to the same extensive list of over 100+ toolboxes covering a wide range of disciplines and specialties. The full list of toolboxes come pre-installed for all UMKC computers where Matlab is installed. These same toolboxes can be manually installed under the Home Use program.
All UMKC students, faculty, and staff are eligible to install Matlab on a personal system for academic or research use.
If you have not already registered your Mathworks account, complete the steps above regarding manual one-time Matlab registration before continuing.
Login to https://www.mathworks.com/downloads/ with your UMKC Mathworks account and download the installer corresponding to your operating system.
Install Matlab using the downloaded file. You will be prompted to login during the installation process.
The first time you launch Matlab you will be prompted to login again.

You can also access Matlab Online entirely in a web browser with no installation required at https://matlab.mathworks.com/. This is ideal for tablets and other devices that do not meet the hardware requirements for installing the Matlab application.
