We seek to increase understanding and awareness of LGBTQIA+ student experiences by providing student panels for classrooms and student organization meetings.
Panels consist of two to four students who explain terminology, provide a list of campus resources, share their personal narrative and facilitate a Q&A.
Panelists are required to attend a training before attending a panel. There is no minimum amount of panels panelists must facilitate to be eligible.
Mentorship offer support around identity development, academics, coming out and campus and community engagement. Our mentorship program reframes mentorship as an activity that we all engage in as we learn from, and teach, one another-- in our mentorship group, undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and staff are grouped together to help support one another and provide a social network, especially for those who are new to UMKC or to the LGBTQIA community. Mentoring relationships are active during the academic year, from August to May.
Everyone in the program will fill out a brief matching survey to help our staff group folks together. Matches will be made based on similar identities, experiences and interests.
Mentors are UMKC graduate or professional students who would like to mentor another LGBTQIA+ student. Mentoring might include conversations around identity development, academics, coming out and campus and community engagement.
