The Faculty Institute for Teaching Inclusive Curricula (FITIC)

FITIC is an initiative that supports Pillar 4 of the UMKC Strategic Plan by helping faculty to develop skills and strategies to create inclusive curricula and classroom cultures that reflect our campuswide dedication to equity and the welcoming of the diverse and global perspectives represented in our surrounding communities.

The program is open to full or part-time UMKC faculty and begins fall 2023. Eligible participants are required to attend all four live FITIC workshops in the 2023-2024 academic year and to complete all asynchronous assignments outlined in the syllabus and housed within our Canvas platform.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be a full- or part-time faculty member at UMKC
  • Attend all four workshops and complete all course modules
  • Must submit syllabus of course to be revised in application
  • Must teach course using revised syllabus spring semester 2024

Required Workshops

  • Wednesday, September 20 from 9 a.m.3:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, November 9 from 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, January 10, 2024 from 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, May 9, 2024: Final Presentation from 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

  • Short essay - What experience have you had in diversity work? What experience have you had with inclusive teaching? Identify three goals you want to accomplish by participating in the FITIC program.

Program deadlines

Submit your application, including to-be-revised the course syllabus, to umkcdiversityinclus@umkc.edu by 5 p.m. on Friday, August 25.

Awardees will be notified by Friday, September 1, and must confirm participation by 5 p.m. on Friday, September 8.
