New Student Orientation
New Student Orientation is an exciting day packed with activities to prepare new Roos for success at UMKC. You'll make connections with other students, learn about campus resources and services, navigate campus and explore student organizations.
Who Attends New Student Orientation?
Fall/Summer Start
- All new, first-time college students and students with 24 or less transferrable credits at the time of admission are required to attend
- Transfer students with move than 24 transferrable credits are not required to attend, but strongly encouraged!
- All new, degree-seeking international students must attend International Student Orientation, held on the Thursday before the start of classes each Fall and Spring
Spring Start
- Orientation is not required for students who start their classes in the Spring semester, though strongly encouraged!
Students enrolled in Online Only programs are not required to attend Orientation.
Steps to Enroll

- Step 1: Admission Confirmation
- Before you can schedule your New Student Orientation, you must pay or defer your confirmation fee to accept your offer of admission.
- Step 2: Select your Orientation session
- Log in to your application status page to select a date and register. You can reschedule up to 10 days before the first scheduled date, if your preferred session is not full.
- Orientation registration opens on December 1st for Summer/Fall entry and on October 1st for Spring entry.
- Step 3: New Student Orientation Module
- Starting March 1, you will have access to the New Student Orientation Module that provides you with an introduction to UMKC resources. You will access this module through your application status page. This step must be completed two weeks prior you scheduled orientation session to be enrolled in courses.
- Step 4: Get Enrolled!
- First Time College students: In addition to the New Student Orientation Module, you must complete the Pre-Orientation Enrollment Survey. This will be available starting March 1st on your application status page. Both items must be completed two weeks prior to your scheduled orientation session to be enrolled in courses.
- Transfer students: Schedule an appointment to meet with your advisor through UMKC Connect or by contacting the Roo Advising office at 816-235-1148 or rooadvising@umkc.edu
- Step 1: Admission Confirmation
Other To-Do Items
- Set up your UMKC single sign-on (SSO) username and password in Pathway. You will need the temporary password that was emailed to you when you applied to UMKC to set up your new password. If you no longer have the temporary password, follow the steps to create a new password.
- Request your student ID, known as the Roo Card.
- Submit your housing application on the Residential Life website.

- 9:00am-9:20am – Welcome with UMKC Senior Leadership
- 9:30am-10:20am – Roo-to-Roo Session
- 10:20am-11:00am – Academic Unit Meeting
- 9:30am-11:00am – Support Your Roo: Parent & Supporter Orientation
- 11:00am-11:15am – Reconnect Students & Supporters
- 11:20am-2:10pm – Breakout Sessions & Lunch
- 2:10pm-4:00pm – Optional Activities
