Overview

The historic Rhodes Scholarship program (created in 1902) funds two to three years of study at the University of Oxford in any graduate program. Rhodes Scholars are chosen not only for their outstanding scholarly achievements, but for their characters, commitment to others and to the common good, and for their potential for leadership in whatever domains their careers may lead. Each year 100 scholars are selected, including 32 from the United States.

Eligibility

Applicants must be a citizen of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, or a DACA recipient with active status. You must have completed an undergraduate degree (usually a bachelor’s) by July 2024, and you must have an academic background and grade that – at a minimum – meets or exceeds the specific entry requirements of your chosen course at the University of Oxford. Candidates will have a higher chance of successful admission to Oxford if they have a GPA of 3.7 or higher (with no rounding).

Award

The Rhodes Scholarship covers Oxford University course fees, as well as providing an annual stipend from which Scholars pay all living expenses, including accommodation (note that this is not sufficient to cover partners or dependents). The detailed Conditions of Tenure document outlines permitted combinations of degrees, and how many years of study are covered by the Scholarship, as the latter depends on course choice – for example up to three years of fees and stipend is available to Scholars who choose to undertake a DPhil (PhD) at Oxford.
