As an academic advisor, I work alongside students to assist them in achieving academic success and to take initiative when it comes to their academic and professional goals. I am aware of how important my position is as an academic advisor, as often advisors are the bridge between students and the university. Most times, outside of faculty, academic advisors are the only other staff that students communicate with on a regular basis. Because of this, I strive to assist students to the best of my ability and to let them know that I am someone they can turn to at any point when they need help. College can be confusing and unfamiliar to many, so I do my best to make students feel comfortable and confident during their time at UMKC. By providing students with the tools and resources needed to succeed academically, I also expect students to be proactive and take initiative when it comes to completing their degree. Academic advising is such an important aspect of college, and I am so glad that I have a role in helping students complete their degrees and go on to succeed in the world after they leave UMKC.
