Credit by departmental examination may be earned if a student has previous knowledge or proficiency in an area of study and arranges to take a departmentally administered examination. The department involved must be willing to offer a test that measures the same level of proficiency as is required to earn credit for enrollment in the course. Before taking a departmental examination, students must obtain a Credit by Departmental Examination Form (PDF) to register for the exam. The charge for attempting credit by departmental exam is equal to one credit hour.

Eligibility for credit by departmental examination requires:

  • Enrolling as a degree-seeking student at UMKC in the same semester in which the student wishes to take the examination
  • Taking the departmental examination by the end of that same term
  • Not having audited or attempted the course for credit in the last three terms, and earning at least a grade of C on the exam

A maximum of 45 hours from these programs may be used toward completing undergraduate requirements. Eligibility to receive credit by examination does not guarantee its applicability to degree programs. The official credit by examination policy of each school and college is available from the appropriate advising office.

Credit can only be awarded based upon official score reports sent to UMKC. Credit will not be awarded based upon scores reported on previous college or university transcripts, nor from student copies of score reports. Official score reports may be sent to:
