Software Support & Installation - Faculty and Staff

The UMKC Technology Support Center is equipped to install a wide selection of software offerings that have been approved for use at UMKC. The Technology Support Center can remotely install site-licensed, department-licensed, and individually-licensed software that has already been purchased, as well as other commonly used software and free utilities. Software support is provided for university-owned computers via phone, email, and online portal for all software listed at the Campus-wide support level. Hands-on support is available to many areas on campus for products at the Campus-wide level and installation for products at the Specialized level. Highly Specialized systems may receive support at a local level from an IT Liaison, but this is not guaranteed.

Software Support - Students

Student software support from the UMKC Technology Support Center includes help configuring Microsoft Outlook (for Windows, Mac, and Mobile) for use with the UMKC email system and networking issues in the Residence Halls for students using ResNet or SafeConnect. Student Assistants are available in the IS Student Computing Labs and other labs on campus to help students the with software installed in those locations. Purchasing Software

UMKC Information Services offers software purchasing services and expertise in product consultation, vendor contracts, volume license agreements, approval facilitation and purchase/delivery processing. All software installed on any UMKC owned computer is subject to UMKC's review and approval process. All licensed software must be purchased by UMKC IS. Personally purchased software is prohibited from installation on UMKC computers. More details are available in the UMKC IT Purchasing Policy. UMKC Information Services maintains Site-Licensed software agreements to provide software for UMKC owned computers at no cost to departments as well as contracts to provide deeply discounted licensing options.  These options include, but are not limited to, the following:

Faculty and Staff are eligible to purchase discounted subscriptions for Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Acrobat Pro through UMKC.  UMKC Adobe licenses include coverage for installation on both UMKC owned computers and personally owned computers.  Department fiscal officers can purchase a license on your behalf using the Adobe Order Form.  Adobe subscriptions must be renewed annually; IS proactively notifies department Fiscal Officers prior to license expiration to allow continuity of service.  Full details regarding which Adobe products and services are included as well as tips on how to get the most of of your subscription are available on the Adobe FAQ.  Faculty and Staff also have free access to a selection of Adobe applications via UMKC Remote Labs.

Students are not eligible for discounted Adobe subscriptions however certain degree programs may provide Adobe licenses directly to students. All students have free access to the full Creative Cloud suite in select IS Student Computing Labs, and RooLabs Online.

ArcGIS provides contextual tools for mapping and spatial reasoning so you can explore data and share location-based insights. ArcGIS creates deeper understanding, allowing you to quickly see where things are happening and how information is connected.

Department fiscal officers can purchase licenses on behalf of faculty, staff, and student employees using the ESRI Order Form. ArcGIS licenses must be renewed annually; IS proactively notifies department Fiscal Officers prior to license expiration to allow continuity of service. Students in some degree programs may be eligible to receive a free student license for installation on a personally owned computer; contact your instructor for details. ArcGIS Pro is available in IS Student Computing Labs, UMKC Remote Labs, and RooLabs Online.

EndNote is the industry standard software tool for publishing and managing bibliographies on the Windows and Macintosh desktop. Writers can save countless hours of typing and interpreting style requirements when creating bibliographies for curricula vitae, manuscripts, thesis/dissertations, grant proposals, term papers, and other publications.

Students have access to EndNote Web via www.myendnoteweb.com for free and can purchase academically priced copies of EndNote Desktop from a variety of online vendors. Faculty and Staff have access to EndNote Web and the EndNote Desktop client. EndNote Desktop can be installed on any UMKC owned computer at no cost, including Labs. EndNote Desktop also offers a Home Use option for Faculty and Staff to use a single UMKC license on personally owned computers.

Grammarly is a cloud-based typing assistant. It reviews spelling, grammar, punctuation, clarity, engagement, and delivery mistakes in English texts, detects plagiarism, and suggests replacements for the identified errors. Linguists and researchers built Grammarly’s unrivaled communication assistance using a variety of methods like machine learning and deep learning. Grammarly is designed to augment human skills so everyone can communicate more clearly and more easily—while still preserving things like individual voice and key context. Freedom Scientific Fusion is an advanced accessibility software that combines the power of ZoomText and JAWS (Job Access With Speech) to create an ideal solution for users with visual impairments. It offers a robust set of features, including screen magnification, customizable color settings, and smooth text-to-speech functionality. Fusion enables users to navigate digital environments with ease, providing support for a wide range of applications, from web browsing to document editing. With flexible magnification levels, powerful voice options, and support for various input devices, Fusion enhances productivity by adapting to the user’s specific visual needs. 

Fusion can be installed on any UMKC-owned computer at no cost.  Additionally, anyone with a umkc.edu email address can download and install JAWS, ZoomText or Fusion on their personally owned PC at no cost.

Maple is the essential technical computing software for today's engineers, mathematicians, and scientists. Whether you need to do quick calculations, develop design sheets, teach fundamental concepts, or produce sophisticated high-fidelity simulation models, Maple's computation engine offers the breadth, depth, and performance to handle every type of mathematics.

Maple can be installed on any UMKC owned computer at no cost, including Labs. Maple is available in IS Student Computing Labs, UMKC Remote Labs, and RooLabs Online. Maple also offers a Home Use option for Faculty and Staff to use a single UMKC license on personally owned computers. 

Matlab is a multi-paradigm programming language and numeric computing environment used for matrix manipulations, plotting of functions and data, implementation of algorithms, creation of user interfaces, and interfacing with programs written in other languages.

UMKC offers a Campus Wide License that provides unlimited use of Matlab and SimuLink to all students, faculty, staff, and researchers. Licensing at UMKC is no longer limited to specific departments. All units and departments at the University are covered to use Matlab for coursework, academic use, and research purposes. The University of Missouri System takes part in both the Microsoft Enrollment for Education Solutions (EES) and the Microsoft Academic Select Plus License programs, which allow faculty and staff to obtain licenses for Microsoft products at a greatly reduced price for use on UMKC owned computers. There is no charge to individual departments, faculty, or staff for Microsoft Windows operating systems or Microsoft Office productivity suite. Annual subscriptions to Microsoft Visual Studio, Visio, and Project are available with discount pricing. Department fiscal officers can purchase these add-on licenses on your behalf using the Microsoft Order Form. Microsoft subscriptions must be renewed annually; IS proactively notifies department Fiscal Officers prior to license expiration to allow continuity of service.

The Microsoft Office365 Pro Plus suite is available at no cost to all actively enrolled students, faculty, and staff for installation on personally owned computers. More information is available on the O365 FAQ.  Office is also available for free use in all Student Computing Labs and remotely via RooLabs Online

With SAS software you can solve next-generation problems with market-leading analytics solutions. Through advancements in high-performance computing, improvements in environment management, enhancements in data management, and expanded analytics capabilities, you can better manage and process "big data."

SAS licenses expire annually on June 1st. Updated licenses are distributed automatically to on-campus workstations. Computer the are primarily used off-campus or used infrequently may experience delays in applying the updated licenses. The SAS application may provide expiration warnings to users while using the application as the deadline approaches, this does not impact functionality. 

SAS can be installed on any UMKC owned Windows computer at no cost, including Labs. SAS is available in IS Student Computing Labs, UMKC Remote Labs, and RooLabs Online. SAS also offers a Home Use option for Faculty and Staff to use a single UMKC SAS license on personally owned computers.

With SPSS software you can address your predictive analytic needs, whether they require reporting, statistics, data mining, text analysis, Web analytics, survey analysis, decision optimization, or a combination of these capabilities.  

SPSS/AMOS licenses expire annually on June 1st. Updated licenses are distributed automatically to on-campus workstations. Computer the are primarily used off-campus or used infrequently may experience delays in applying the updated licenses. The applications may provide expiration warnings to users while using the application as the deadline approaches, this does not impact functionality. 

SPSS/AMOS can be installed on any UMKC owned computer at no cost, including Labs. SPSS/AMOS are available in IS Student Computing Labs, UMKC Remote Labs, and RooLabs Online

  • Qualtrics is a cloud-based platform for creating and distributing web-based surveys. If you want to distribute a one-time survey, or surveys that don’t need to be tracked as part of a large, multi-survey project, Qualtrics is the tool to use.
  • REDCap is a secure, web-based application for building and managing online surveys and databases. REDCap provides automated export procedures for seamless data downloads to Excel and common statistical packages (SPSS, SAS, Stata, R), as well as a built-in project calendar, a scheduling module, ad hoc reporting tools, and advanced features, such as branching logic, file uploading, and calculated fields.
  • Survey Monkey is not an approved tool for UMKC use.

 Academic Pricing for Software on Personal Computers

  • Students can purchase a variety of academically priced software directly from the UMKC Bookstore
  • Faculty, staff, and students may be eligible to purchase discounted software through UMKC's OnTheHub site. This selection varies by Department and degree program.
  • Faculty and Staff can obtain free Home Use licenses to install SAS, Maple, or EndNote on personally owned computers.

Software Support Levels

Level I — Campus-Wide Support. Information Services makes a strong commitment to providing advanced support including the installation, configuration, usage and troubleshooting of these products. Many times, the support resources for these systems will be outside the Information Services organization, such as at the UM System level; however, support issues will be routed to the supporting group accordingly. Level I products have the following characteristics:
  • Critical to the University mission
  • Widely used across campus
  • Evaluated as being one of the top products in its class
  • Runs adequately on computers meeting the UMKC standards for new microcomputers
  • Sufficient support resources exist
  • Valid licenses exist
Level II — Specialized Support. Specific technical groups are generally involved with supporting or using these applications. Application expertise may exist in the departments. If you are not familiar with whom to contact for support, the IS Technology Support Center is a great place to start. Level II products have the following characteristics:
  • Critical to the University mission
  • Highly-specialized, niche software
  • Not accessible at a campus-wide level
  • Valid licenses exist
Level III — No Support. Level III products are not supported by Information Services. Level III products have one or more of the following characteristics:
  • Product is no longer supported by the vendor
  • Security issues exist
  • No valid license exists
  • No support expertise or resources for the product exists in Information Services
Level IV — Unauthorized. Level IV products are software that is not authorized for any University use.  This software either has security concerns or the University has existing standards in place. Level IV products include:
  • Jotform - Qualtics or Microsoft Forms are supported alternatives
  • SurveyMonkey - Qualtics or Microsoft Forms are supported alternatives
  • ConstantContact - EMMA is the supported standard
  • MailChimp - EMMA is the supported standard
  • Otter.ai - Rev.ai (for general transcription), Zoom AI, or Microsoft Teams Premium are supported alternatives
