UMKC offers more transit options than ever before.

KCATA RideKC Zero Fare Program + UMKC Shuttle Bus

The KCATA RideKC Buses are currently Zero Fare and does not require a student ID when boarding. The service area includes all of Johnson County and Wyandotte County in Kansas, and all of Kansas City and Independence in Missouri.

A student ID is required when boarding the UMKC Shuttle Bus and is as good for getting around campus as it is for gaining admission to sporting events, checking out books at the library and buying a meal.

Convenience

The Kansas City Area Transit Authority (KCATA) offers the convenience of getting around Kansas City and suburban Johnson County, Kan., without having to worry about parking. There are many park-and-ride locations in Jackson County that allow riders to park closer to home — whether that's Independence, Raytown, the Northland, Blue Springs or Lee's Summit — and ride the bus to their destination, like the UMKC campus or the Plaza.

Bus safety tips

Here are some tips to keep in mind when you're riding the bus:

  • Travel with a companion, when possible, especially at night.
  • Be familiar with the bus schedule, particularly when the last bus runs. Keep cab fare and taxi phone number on hand in case you're stranded.
  • Be aware of your surroundings at bus stops and when you're on public transportation.
  • Stay alert even when you're listening to music or reading a book.
  • Be wary of strangers who want to borrow your cell phone or ask you for money.
  • Keep valuables between your side and the wall of the vehicle, not on the aisle side of you. Someone getting off the bus could grab them.
  • If you're carrying large or multiple items such as suitcases or backpacks, don't put them on a seat behind you. Keep them as close to you as possible.
  • If you're standing on a crowded bus, pay close attention to your wallet, purse or other belongings.
  • Don't hesitate to move away from a passenger who makes you feel uncomfortable or is bothering you. If he or she persists, notify the bus driver.
  • Notify the police of any crime as soon as possible.
