Legislative Branch

The Legislative Branch of the Student Government Association, known as the UMKC Student Senate, is the policy-creating entity within student government. Led by the Speaker of the Senate, SGA Senate consists of 40 student senators from different academic programs and organizations on campus and works to create collaborative and innovative student policies.

Legislative committees meet with campus leaders, administration and programs to advocate for students across the university. All committees are comprised of active senators who work under the support of a dedicated chair to create projects and legislation. Every other week, the entire Student Government Association meets at the senate meeting to discuss ongoing projects and debate legislation.

Student Advocacy

Senators follow a multi-step process to enhance university life for all UMKC students.

  1. Senators collaborate and draft legislation about student concerns and priorities
  2. Senators present the proposed legislation to campus leaders and university administration
  3. The proposed legislation is filed with the Speaker of the Senate
  4. The proposed legislation is assigned to a committee

  5. The full senate debates the legislation
