Evaluation of Faculty Performance
Full-time tenure-track, tenured and non-tenure-track faculty are reviewed and evaluated annually. Tenure-track faculty also complete a comprehensive third-year review at the midpoint of their tenure probationary period. This is sometimes also referred to as the "mid-probationary period review". Tenured faculty also complete a comprehensive five-year post-tenure review every five years following the initial awarding of tenure.
The processes for these reviews and evaluations are based on the University of Missouri System Collected Rules and Regulations (CRR) and campus, academic unit and departmental policies, as noted below.
Evaluation Processes
Procedures for each category of review (annual, three-year, post-tenure) are provided to faculty by the provost, the unit dean, and/or the department/division chair.
All faculty evaluation processes utilize the myVITA faculty reporting system.
Annual evaluation
Annual evaluations of faculty occur in the spring semester, typically in February and March. Specific instructions are provided to the faculty by the unit dean or the department/division chair.
The university’s policy on evaluation for tenure-track and tenured faculty is contained in CRR 310.015. Both CRR 310.015 and CRR 310.035 provide guidance for the evaluation on non-tenure-track faculty. CRR 310.020 provides additional information specific to the evaluation of tenure-track faculty during the tenure probationary period.
Third-year/mid-probationary period review
In addition to the annual review of faculty performance, tenure-track faculty are also required to receive a more comprehensive review at the mid-point of their pre-tenure probationary period (most commonly toward the end of their third academic year on faculty). The procedures regarding the mid-tenure review are contained in CRRs 310.020 Regulations Governing Application of Tenure and 320.035 Policies and Procedures for Promotion and Tenure.

Five-year post-tenure review
The university policy and procedures for the five-year post-tenure review process are contained in CRR 310.015, Section B.1.d. At five-year intervals, each tenured faculty member will be evaluated on their research, teaching and service activities for the prior five-year period.
Reviews may be conducted by the unit chair or a unit evaluation committee, as decided by a vote of the tenured faculty. The first five-year post-tenure review will be conducted five years after the tenure decision or the last formal review of the faculty member for promotion to associate professor or professor. Faculty hired with tenure will be reviewed five years after they are hired.
