Professional Licensure Disclosures
The U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, specifically 34 CFR 668.43 (a) (5) (v) and 34 CFR 668.43 (c), require disclosures by institutions regarding educational requirements for programs leading to professional licensure or certification, regardless of modality.
The information on this page was developed to inform students and other stakeholders about the UMKC programs that lead to professional licensure or certification. Programs omitted from this list are not intended to lead to professional licensure or certification. Since professional licensure and certification requirements vary from state to state, disclosures posted on this website can be used to confirm if programs offered by UMKC meet the educational prerequisites for professional licensure or certification within and outside the state of Missouri.
UMKC will review state licensure requirements annually to ensure the most up-to-date information. Students are encouraged to consult state licensure requirements directly. State licensure information sites are provided when available.
The UMKC Catalog evaluates any program that is designed to meet specific state licensure requirements and the program’s status as of July 1 annually. Additional information is available at Licenses and Disclosures.
Many licensing and certifying boards require more than successful degree completion to obtain a license or certification. Please be advised that state laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, which can impact the program's ability to meet educational requirements for licensure or certification.
Disclosures Based on Student Location
The U.S. Department of Education requires direct disclosures of professional licensure or certification information to students based on their locations.
Relocating to another state prior to completing a program may affect state licensure requirements. Prior to considering relocation, students are advised to contact their programs to discuss licensure and certification eligibility requirements. Following relocation, students must update their addresses in Pathway. UMKC will not consider a student to have relocated until the update has been completed in Pathway.
Please see the information below if you are a prospective or current UMKC student interested in pursuing professional licensure after graduation. UMKC strongly recommends that students review the applicable licensure board(s) in their state of residence or in the state where they intend to obtain a license before beginning an academic program that results in licensure or certification and prior to beginning any practicum/internship.
Enrollment
Licensure Programs may enroll any student located: in the state of Missouri, a state for which it meets the educational requirements for eligibility for licensure, or outside the United States. Licensure Programs may not enroll Distance Education Students located in a state where the university has determined it does not meet such requirements or it has not determined whether the program will meet such requirements without an attestation that the Distance Education Student intends to seek licensure and employment in a specific state for which the Licensure Program meets the educational requirements for eligibility for licensure.
Attestation
You will be asked to clarify your goals and confirm that the UMKC program meets your educational and career goals (for example, your intent on moving from the state you currently reside in to another state for the purposes of seeking employment). If UMKC’s program does meet your goals, you will be asked to complete an attestation document prior to enrolling in courses. If you would like to speak with an advisor, please see the catalog for contact information.

Accountant

Location requirements
Primarily UMKC on-campus enrollmentOverview
A bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field is typically required to become an accountant. Individuals may work in the field without licensure or certifications, but the program meets the Missouri education requirement. Completing certification in a specific field of accounting, such as becoming a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA), may improve job prospects.
The master’s in accounting (when coupled with an undergraduate degree in accounting or business) meets the education and licensure requirements for most jurisdictions. Most states require a separate ethics exam and work experience for licensure. Full licensure requires passing four sections of the CPA Exam (MS Aligned Interest Areas) AND work experience. Some jurisdictions may have additional requirements. The CPA Exam is consistent across all jurisdictions, but some jurisdictions have different requirements.

Anesthesiologist Assistant
Degree
Anesthesia, M.S.Current program details
Anesthesia, M.S.Location requirements
Primarily UMKC on-campus enrollment
Overview
To become certified, Anesthesiologist Assistants must:
- Obtain an anesthesia-related master’s degree from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
- Pass a national certifying exam administered by the National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants (NCCAA).
- Meet minimum standards for clinical hours, types of anesthetics and surgical procedures, and clinical procedures as specified by the National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants (NCCAA).
Upon receipt of certification, graduates can apply for licensing in states where CAA's can practice.
The purpose of the National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants (NCCAA) includes ensuring that Certified Anesthesiologist Assistants (CAAs) have the necessary knowledge and skills to practice safely and effectively. For entry level CAAs, the NCCAA verifies academic qualifications with each academic program for certification eligibility and tests knowledge by using a Certification exam. As a prerequisite for certification eligibility and to maintain and protect the strength of the CAA credential, the NCCAA collects a record of clinical experience from student anesthesiologist assistants (SAAs) to verify entry-level clinical standards are met for new CAAs. Clinical hours and experiences are self-reported to the NCCAA via a digital mobile application. The clinical experience record is verified with academic institutions and reviewed to determine certification eligibility. SAAs are required to complete education and clinical training minimums prior to becoming eligible for board certification by examination.

Each state has additional requirements, including an exam and post-graduate professional experience for LCSW licensure. There is a national exam through the Association of Social Work Boards, but not all states have adopted this.
