Michele Smith, Ph.D., dean of students and vice provost for student affairs, has announced her transition to a full-time faculty position in January 2025. Working in dual roles for the past few years, she managed a large and complex portfolio, and we appreciate her dedication to ensuring that our students thrive at UMKC.

We are reviewing the student affairs portfolio structure and will share specifics on the leadership search plan and timeline later in the academic year.

In the short term, Todd Wells will serve as interim dean of students beginning January 1. Todd is a seasoned student affairs leader and currently serves as assistant dean of students. There will not be an interim vice provost for student affairs. In lieu of that, Assistant Dean Keichanda Dees Burnett, her portfolio of student affairs departments and residential life will report to Rebecca Diemer, Ph.D., director of academic affairs strategic initiatives. Roo Wellness and the Student Union teams will report to the provost.
