McHenry served as a UMKC police officer for four years. Prior to that, he served in the Independence police department, airport police at Kansas City International Airport and was a veteran of the United States Army.
His co-workers remember him as people-centered, friendly and caring. In 2023, he saved a life in the UMKC Health Sciences District. McHenry was on duty, when someone in a car waved him over while approaching the hospital. Inside the car, he discovered a person suffering from an overdose and administered emergency nasal spray, saving their life. He received the UMKC Police Life-Saving Award.
McHenry was also recognized for his contributions to supporting people experiencing mental-health crises. In 2022, he received the department’s Crisis Intervention Team award, which recognizes law-enforcement officers who connect people with the services they need.
Services for McHenry are visitation 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 29, Eley & Sons Funeral Home, 4707 E. Truman Road, Kansas City; funeral at 10 a.m. Aug. 30 at Calvary Temple Baptist Church, 2940 Holmes St., Kansas City, and interment at 12:30 p.m. Aug. 30 at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery, 150 Muncie Road, Leavenworth, Kansas.
