“Tamara has extensive fundraising and grant experience that can provide important support for faculty research and creativity,” said Jennifer Lundgren, Ph.D. provost and executive vice chancellor. “Her interdisciplinary focus will be a great asset in the new school with its emphasis on both the humanities and the social sciences.”
Falicov is the author of two books: “Latin American Film Industries” and “The Cinematic Tango: Contemporary Argentine Film.” Her research interests have ranged from Latin American film studies to assisting medical researchers in understanding language and culture in the treatment of Hispanic patients and families. In May she was awarded the Faculty Mentor of the Year Award through the McNair Scholars program designed for first generation undergraduate students of color interested in pursuing graduate degrees.
“I’m honored to be heading up the new School of Humanities and Social Sciences at UMKC. Its faculty, staff and students have impressed me with their commitment to making a positive impact on campus and in the Kansas City community,” Falicov said. “I look forward to working with a great team as we strive for excellence in student success, research endeavors and, overall, making sure that UMKC fosters a welcoming and stimulating environment for current and prospective students, staff and faculty.”
She received her Ph.D. in Communication from the University of California, San Diego. She will begin work at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences on Aug. 1.
