Rowse was a lighting and projection designer, and theatrical technician, with more than 30 years of professional experience. He got his start in stage lighting while attending Simpson College, spending summers at the Des Moines Metro Opera. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1988, he moved to Kansas City and gradually established himself as a fixture in the Kansas City theatre scene. While he has served in multiple creative, managerial and technical capacities, Rowse is known primarily for his lighting designs. His professional design career began in 1991 with the American Heartland Theatre and his association with that company continued through its closing in 2013, during which time he designed lighting for 105 productions there. His design work, a subject of frequent critical acclaim, has also been seen in productions by the Unicorn Theatre, the Missouri Rep, First Stage Milwaukee, The Coterie Theatre, Theatre at KU, Musical Theater Heritage, the Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre, Spinning Tree Theatre, The Living Room, Owen Cox Dance and The Kansas City Actors Theatre.
